Whale Watching

Whale watching is one recreational activity that brings many tourists to the Costa Ballena area -- it's called "Whale Coast" for a reason! From August to October, the waters of Marino Ballena National Park are filled with humpback whales that come up from the Southern Hemisphere to give birth, and from December to April, the whales from the Northern Hemisphere come to do the same. You can also see dolphins, colorful fish, and sea turtles. There are many different companies in the area that offer boat tours, whale watching, and day trips to Isla del Caño, an island and Biological Reserve that was a burial ground from Pre-Columbian times and is today an excellent place to snorkel and scuba dive due to the incredibly rich marine life that surrounds it.

Surfing and Stand Up Paddle Boarding

There are several beaches around the area that are good for surfing, no matter what your level. If you are a beginner, Playa Ballena is an excellent place to learn due to its soft waves and sandy sea floor. There are several surf schools in the area if you want to take lessons or just rent boards. Playa Dominical, a 15-minute drive to the north, has a heavier wave that is better suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. There are also several other beaches in the vicinity that have waves that are adequate for all levels. You can also rent stand-up paddle boards, a fun activity that will not only help you get in shape but also allow you to see this area from a different angle. Visiting Isla Ballena on a stand-up paddle board is well worth it.

There are many other land activities to participate in around the area. The coastal environment attracts scores of colorful birds, making it a perfect place for bird watching. There are also many trails and hikes in the mountains around Ballena, as well as a few waterfalls to visit if you feel like swimming in fresh water. During a hike in this area, you are more than likely to see exotic animals such as sloths, White Face Capuchin and howler monkeys. Perhaps, you will want to see these animals from the air by taking a canopy or zip-lining tour. Also, ATV rentals are available for those who want to be able to explore more of the area than they would be able to do on foot.
